Creating a Case

The Tree pane is the starting point for the detail that follows in the other two panes and the location from where you will do much of your work in EnCase. However, before you can work with the Tree pane, or any pane for that matter, you need to have a case open. And before you can have a case open, you need to create a case. When EnCase starts, it opens by default to the Home screen. From the Home screen, you create a case by clicking New Case in the case file section. Alternatively, you can select Case > New Case from the application toolbar. After you click New Case, you are presented with the dialog box shown in Figure 6-8.
