Acknowledgments
This book is the end result of years of thought and work, and has been shaped by many, many people. Some of them know the impact that they have had; some of them do not. A great pleasure of writing a book is sitting down when the manuscript is complete and thinking of all the people you are grateful to, who helped you along the way, and then letting them know.
I acknowledge my parents in the dedication. It is very moving to me, now with a son of my own, to think about how they supported me. My interest in electronics arose basically out of nowhere, after I was blown away by the Apple II computer that my elementary school bought when I was in the third grade. The following Christmas, my father bought me a copy of Basic Electricity/Electronics Vol. 1: Basic Principles, whose authorship is unclear, but the second edition I have was revised by Robert R. Manville. I struggled mightily to understand it. It was years before I really could, but that book is a treasured possession and is in fact on my shelf as I write these acknowledgments over 40 years later. A couple of years after that book, my mother found a McGraw-Hill correspondence course on electronics. They would send written materials, along with electronic components and solderless breadboards. Both of them continued to support me with trips to our local Radio Shack, sometimes just to look at what was on the shelves, and then through the long journey through high school, college, graduate school, academia, ...
