Chapter 13. Gears, Bearings, and Cams
13-1 Introduction
This chapter explains how to draw and design with gears and bearings. The chapter does not discuss how to design specific gears and bearings, but how to design by using existing parts selected from manufacturers’ catalogs. Various gear terms are defined, and design applications demonstrated.
The chapter also discusses how to design and draw a cam according to a displacement diagram. Different types of follower motion are explained, as well as different types of followers.
13-2 Types of Gears
There are many types of gears, including spur, bevel, worm, helical, and rack. See Figure 13-1. Each type has its own terminology, drawing requirements, and design considerations.
