5Some Points of Grammar and Style

We have likened the rules of writing to engineering standards. In this chapter we review some basic aspects of English style necessary for technical writing. Rather than a formal exposition, we offer a list of suggestions much in the form of the classic book The Elements of Style, written by William Strunk Jr. nearly one hundred years ago. We try to minimize grammatical terminology and leave a review of essential terms for the Quick Reference (see p. 167).
