Laying the Foundations of Modern Science

It was 1548. King Edward VI was in the second year of what would turn out to be a seven-year reign. Like all monarchs, he had the ability to, among other cool things, issue proclamations. The ten-year-old king likely leaned on his advisers to issue an interesting one. Almost a century after the Bible rolled off the press, King Edward VI issued “A Proclamation Against Those That Doeth Innouate” (figure 3-1).*

The image shows a page of dense text in old English calligraphy with the title, “A proclamation against those that doeth innouate,” at the top. At the top left, a large illustrated letter T opens the first paragraph. At bottom are the words “God save the king” and some Latin text.
