How to Use This Book
This book is designed to present a coherent one-semester course in the essentials of discrete mathematics for several different audiences. Figure 1 shows a diagram describing the dependencies among the sections of this book. Regardless of audience, a course should cover the sections labeled “Core” in the diagram: 1.1-1.5, 2.1-2.4, 3.1-3.4, 4.1-4.3, 4.5, 5.1.
Beyond these 18 core sections, instructors have many options for additional sections to include, depending on the audience. A one-semester course should be able to cover approximately 5-8 additional sections. Table 1 shows three possible course outlines, each with a different focus.
