Objective 4.1: Provision and configure web applications
The web applications that support your SharePoint installation are the first component that your users encounter. An incorrectly configured web application can vary in experience from being entirely nonfunctional (misconfigured authentication mechanisms) to being functional but inconsistent (in the case of poorly configured alternate access mappings).
Configuring this level of the farm also becomes your first effort at maintaining effective security and governance mechanisms.
