6.7.1. Mode I Central Through-Crack in a Finite Plate

A plate of size 41 m × 41 m with a central through-crack is subjected to uniform tension at the upper and lower edges, which are parallel to the y-axis, as shown in Figure 6.21. The crack length is 2a and the plate thickness is 1 m. Clearly this is a planar mode I fractured plate. It is simulated by the X-FEM program using CB shell elements. The relation between the normalized SIF and the crack length can be obtained from an analytical solution (plane problem), which is plotted along with the numerical results in Figure 6.22.
