Theatrical films are the backbone of most filmmakers’ business plans. As the industry changes, however, the potential for artistic expression is growing far beyond the notion of a single theatrical. In recent years, many filmmakers have successfully specialized in documentaries, commercials, industrials, educationals, and infomercials, as well as cable, video, and DVD productions. The focus of this chapter is traditional theatrical films. Chapter 6 (“Markets, Part II”) discusses nontraditional films.
