Why should people go out and pay money to see bad films, when they can stay at home and see bad television for free?

Theatrical films are the backbone of most filmmakers’ business plans. As the industry changes, however, the potential for artistic expression is growing far beyond the notion of a single theatrical. In recent years, many filmmakers have successfully specialized in documentaries, commercials, industrials, educationals, and infomercials, as well as cable, video, and DVD productions. The focus of this chapter is traditional theatrical films. Chapter 6, “The Markets, Part II,” discusses nontraditional films.
