10.1 Introduction

The aim of this chapter is to integrate the process of deriving the equations of motion of a rigid and flexible aircraft. One of the effects of flexibility is that the centre of mass (CM) of the aircraft is continuously changing. For this reason, it is not really advisable to use the CM of the rigid aircraft as the origin of the reference frame, in which the equations of motion are developed. Rather, it is better to formulate equations of motion given that the origin of the body-fixed reference frame is some arbitrary fixed point in the aircraft. This is done in Section 10.2.
