Chapter 7. Years Seven to Ten: VC to IPO

This chapter traces CollabKo’s journey from private equity patronage through to more growth-focussed venture capital investments (VC), and finally to initial public offering (IPO) to the market1.

The company’s internal structure is reshaped as the logic of its investment dictates various changes. First, products are separated according to their revenue patterns, and, ultimately, the legacy product line (Collaboron) is sold off. It’s also reshaped with new hires and departments that are added in order to conform to investors’ expectations for stability and operational probity. The board evolves from a small set of relatively pragmatic stewards into an exit-driven governance machine.

These years also show how the mechanics of capital (runway, burn, valuation narratives, and disclosure) reach directly into architecture and engineering culture. Cloud spend becomes a strategic argument, compliance and security become first-class product constraints, and “IPO readiness” introduces process and auditability as engineering ...
