Fourier Modal Method
In the previous chapter, the principle and mathematical framework of the S-matrix method was established by an analysis of 1D multiblock structures. The term 1D means that the structures have permittivity and permeability profiles that vary along the z-direction. The principle and mathematical framework of the Fourier modal method (FMM) is described in this chapter. We present FMM with a logical extension of the previous 1D structure analysis, keeping in mind that FMM is actually a mathematical generalization of the previous analysis on 1D structures to 2D/3D structures.
