Employers have traditionally conducted the actual appraisal using one or more of the formal methods we describe in this section.

Graphic Rating Scale Method

The graphic rating scale is probably still the most familiar and popular method for appraising performance, and comes in several varieties. The one in Figure 8.2 lists several job dimensions (in this case “communication” and “teamwork”) and a range of performance values (from “below expectations” to “role model”) for each. The supervisor rates each subordinate by circling the score that best describes the subordinate’s performance for each trait.
