Build Visible Scorecards: Improving Performance by Keeping Score
The old management maxim rings true, “What gets measured, gets done.”
Imagine you’re at a playground where two groups of kids are playing soccer on adjacent fields. On one field, the kids are keeping score. On another field, they aren’t. How do you think the level of effort and performance will differ between the two fields? Even if you were far away, so you could only see, not hear, the action, how long would it take you to figure out which field was which? It probably wouldn’t take long.
Keeping score naturally motivates people to play harder. It lets them know when their efforts are having an impact, and when they’re falling short.
