When I got out of the USMC and before I decided a second try at college would be a good idea, I got a job as a heavy diesel mechanic at a big RV shop. If you’ve seen motorhomes out on the highway—some of them as large as a commercial bus—then you know what I’m talking about. I had some diesel skills from the military and a lot of general tinkering skills from growing up in a family of tinkerers, and what I didn’t already know, I was pretty good at picking up.

Most mechanics are responsible for their own tools, so for a while, part of my salary went into expanding my toolset. Some tools, like a hammer, are very broadly useful, and others are super specific to a single job, sometimes on a single vehicle type. You might be able to get by without the super specialized tools, but if you had them when you needed them, they tended to pay for themselves ...
