Glossary

adjective  A word that modifies nouns.

adverb  A word that modifies verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs.

affix  An element attached to the beginning, middle, or end of a root or word that modifies its meaning. Affixes include prefixes, infixes, and suffixes.

agreement  The condition when parts of a sentence have the same case, gender, number, or person.

analogy  A comparison between two different entities or processes, usually based on a similarity between the two.

antecedent  The referent of a pronoun—the noun to which it refers.

appositive  A grammatical construction that puts a subject or object in different words. Appositives rename.
