Internet of Things to Be Hacked

This chapter covers the topic of Internet-connected devices, called the Internet of Things (IoT). The phrase “Internet of Things” was first coined in a 1999 presentation at MIT by Kevin Ashton.¹ In 2008, the number of connected devices surpassed the number of humans on the planet at 8 billion,² so the security of these devices is becoming increasingly important. The pace at which IoT devices are connected is staggering. Cisco expects the number of IoT devices to exceed 50 billion by 2020.³ Think about that for a moment: that is more than 8 connected devices for each human on the planet by 2020.
