For me, the most compelling reason to write unit tests is that it makes me feels good. It feels great to go home at the end of the day or week and know that everything is working as intended and that the tests are making sure of it.
This is not to say that there are no bugs, but there are definitely fewer. Once fixed, bugs don't come back, saving me from embarrassment and saving me time. And, perhaps most importantly, fixing bugs means fewer support calls at nights and weekends because something is broken.
