Architecture and cityscapes are the modern land-scape. Unlike traditional landscapes, cityscapes are most often a hodgepodge — the accumulation of humanity's ever-changing footprint over many years. When isolated, however, individual structures can tell a singular story.

Buildings reflect many things —? the age in which they were built, the character of the builders, and the dreams and aspirations of the community or nation. Buildings can be linear and rigid or flowing and esoteric. Whether new or old, they can inspire us. And, in this chapter, you learn what to look for when selecting buildings and cityscapes to photograph, and how to capture them the best way possible for conversion to HDR.

CAPTURING ARCHITECTURE

Evaluating architecture as a subject for photography, and specifically for HDR photography, is an important skill. As you develop it, you are able to spend more time capturing appealing buildings or scenes and pass over the rest. As with much of photography, the challenge is to see how light interacts with the subject to reveal details, contrast, and color. It's your job to capture that light.
