The Institutions and Individuals That Comprise Our Healthcare System
In the prior section, we discussed how our healthcare system is performing along three core dimensions: cost, quality, and access. In this section, we explore the types of organizations and professionals comprising the healthcare system. We begin by discussing the institutions that make up the infrastructure of our healthcare system. We then discuss the types of healthcare professionals working within and outside these institutions. We return later in the chapter to a discussion of the primary regulator of healthcare: the government (Figure 1-1).
