Standards Categories
Four broad areas are used to categorize health data standards.6 Health data interchange standards are used to establish a common, predictable, secure communication protocol between and among systems. Vocabulary standards consist of standardized nomenclatures and code sets used to describe clinical problems and procedures, medications, and allergies. Content standards and value sets are used to share clinical information such as clinical summaries, prescriptions, and structured electronic documents. Security standards include those standards used for authentication, access control, and transmission of health data.
