Chapter 21. Internet Phone Service

One of the more recent benefits of Internet technology is the ability to have voice conversations over an Internet connection. Using the Internet for telephone service in this manner was at first just a cheap work around to long distance phone bills, but the quality of the connection was spotty and, in many cases, unreliable. Recent improvements in technology though have made Internet Protocol (IP) telephony (also known as voice over Internet Protocol [VoIP]) a viable and reliable alternative to a standard telephone connection, or at least a very good option for saving on long distance, especially if you have friends or family living abroad.
