Tourism and Travel—What Changed?

There was a complete breakdown of tourism and hospitality sectors with a dramatic, immediate, effect. As we have seen, the travel industry was the hardest hit with air travel virtually stopped and airports deserted. Public transport to and from airports was minimal, around 20 percent of normal capacity, with the emphasis on serving key workers. By the middle of 2020, those going back to work in the United Kingdom were told to expect only 10 percent of usual travel provision, and around the world trains were canceled and rail stations deserted—Figure 5.1 of an empty rail station in Australia became the norm. Not an encouraging sign for anyone.
