Linux and Unix are very popular with programmers, not just due to the overwhelming array of tools and environments available but also because the system is exceptionally well documented and transparent. On a Linux machine, you don’t have to be a programmer to take advantage of development tools, but when working with the system, you should know something about programming tools because they play a larger role in managing Unix systems than in other operating systems.
