If you do not know where you are, how do you know which direction to take to get somewhere else – somewhere better? Figure 3.1 illustrates a snapshot assessment of performance. Organizational assessment is a systematic process of collecting and analyzing data to determine its current, historical, or protected status. There are four basic steps to organizational assessment:

  1. Describe the current state.

  2. Envision the future state.

  3. Assess the gap.

  4. Set quantifiable goals.
