Chapter 5Becoming an Ideas Leader

Thinking on the edges is ‘the skill’.

Let's start with the basics. Behind every profound leader are a set of basics that work with a high degree of consistency. You can also call them habits.

One of the most important skills is to think multi-industry, in an interconnected way. This is particularly difficult due to the operational pressures companies put on their leaders and managers. But the best of them break through the operational pressures to create a bubble where they are able to ideate and contribute not just in their jobs but at an enterprise level. They are the ones who get noticed and who ace conversations that get them the next job.

With the impact of AI and the anticipated disruption of jobs, most leaders and professionals are struggling to understand what future skills to build. While technical or expertise-based skills are vital, the one skill that is foundational to success is multidisciplinary, interconnected thinking. And I have four simple, but powerful steps for leaders to build this skill (illustrated in Figure 5.1):

  1. Learn About Two Industries (Other Than Yours): Look at things like evolution, business models, technologies, competitive landscape, geographic play, pricing, monetization, talent, expertise types, future trends.
