The Lean Goal Is Zero Defects
Many organizations use what is called statistical process control (SPC); however, SPC will not ensure zero defects, since the defects are usually detected after they are made (historical data). SPC should be used as a preventive tool to identify patterns before an out-of-control condition happens. In a truly Lean environment, abnormalities should be clearly and immediately visible in the workplace and fixed in real time. Lean requires defect-free processes to support a just in time (JIT) system, thus the goal of Lean is 100% defect prevention at the source. If this is not the case, then the system breaks down and delays will occur.
