2 Power Converters and Power Management ICs
Chapter 1 briefly reviewed the topologies of power converters. This chapter focuses on integrated power converters and power management ICs. Smart power ICs are a special class of integrated circuits that combine the decision-making circuits (the smart) and the power switches (the muscle) to deliver power to a load in an intelligent and efficient way. This chapter introduces the concept of power management and the corresponding smart power IC implementation via several examples. The fabrication technologies and semiconductor devices that are used to implement smart power ICs will be discussed in Chapters 7 and 8.
