Now that you have a plan (or two) in mind, we take a look at the equipment required for each type of service. Cable VoIP and Internet VoIP services are similar, while VoIP chat service is quite different.
Cable VoIP Service Equipment
Cable VoIP services require a terminal adapter to convert the phone handsets in your home to VoIP. The terminal adapter function is often incorporated directly into the cable modem that’s given to you by your broadband cable provider. Figure 8-1 shows examples of commonly used cable modems with integrated VoIP terminal adapters.
