Apple Events are the only IPC mechanism which is universally supported by GUI applications on macOS for remote control. Operations like opening an application or telling an application to open a file or to quit and so on can be done using these.

Apple events provide a data transport and event dispatching mechanism that can be used for IPC between applications on the same computer or between applications on different computers connected to a network.
