The Lock Screen is the first thing you see when you power on or wake up your iPhone or iPad, and it contains a wealth of functionality, such as the current time, notifications, and various optional widgets.

Lock and Unlock Your Device

When you turn on or wake up your device, it’s initially locked, so you have to unlock it before you can do most activities. iPhones and iPads are all equipped with either Touch ID or Face ID, which you can use to unlock them:

  • Face ID (iPhones without Home buttons and many new iPad models): Lift the device or tap the screen to wake it and then look directly at the screen.
