Organization of the Material

Chapter 1, Introduction to Computer Forensics, introduces you to digital forensics and its core values and practices.

Chapter 2, Understanding the iPhone, introduces you to the iPhone’s basic architecture and explains how to get your desktop machine prepared for forensic work.

Chapter 3, Accessing the iPhone, explains how to access the iPhone to install an open source forensic toolkit, crack passcode protection, and set up the iPhone to communicate with a desktop on a wireless network.

Chapter 4, Forensic Recovery, explains the actual recovery process: how to obtain the raw disk image on the device. It will then introduce you to many recovery tools used to find and carve out deleted files from the iPhone.

Chapter 5, Electronic Discovery, explains electronic discovery and shows you what information is available on the live filesystem of the iPhone, and where to find and extract it.

Chapter 6, Desktop Trace, illustrates desktop trace: recovering iPhone backups from a desktop and how to prove trusted pairing relationships with a desktop machine.

Chapter 7, Case Help, explores various scenarios and what kind of information would be of interest in each case.

The Appendix provides the necessary disclosures and source code for law enforcement agencies, and the information needed to reproduce the methods used in the open source tools employed in this book.
