I want to thank all of the people who helped get this book to completion, not only in its writing, but on the road to getting the opportunity to write it. Because I don't know if I'll ever get to do something like this again, I'll focus on the people who deserve the most credit. In that vein (cue the Oscar music), I would first like to thank Carol Long at Wiley for seeking me out and making all this possible. I would also like to thank Christopher Rivera and Liz Britten at Wiley for working with me to get the words and concepts just right. Going back to the start of the road that got me here, I would like to thank my grandparents, who gave up a lot in order to raise me so that my parents could work to support us. We weren't quite Charlie Bucket's family, but it was close at times. To my dad I owe the fostering of my curiosity about technology, even the technology I shouldn't have been touching when he wasn't looking. To my mom, I would simply like to say that "I made it," because she wasn't around long enough for that outcome to be certain by any means. Finally, there's my wife, Diane, who stood by and smiled (sometimes through gritted teeth) as this project took place. To her I say, in the spirit of many other book dedications that I've seen, thanks for not freaking out (too much) at how long this took to complete and how little you saw me in 2007.
