No management system always maintains 100% conformity. Over time, the various constituent parts of the BCMS will shift in and out of conformity as the organisation’s operations evolve. This is a natural part of operating a management system, and the presence of nonconformities does not necessarily mean that the BCMS is failing to achieve its objectives – only that some aspects of the system are not operating as they should.
Nonconformities are usually grouped into three categories: major, minor and opportunity for improvement (often shortened to OFI):
