Patterns

A pattern is a filter criteria to match possible join-points. It tells Spring AOP what to match. Patterns are generally written within brackets, just after the PCD. It's a kind of regular expression in AOP to select the desired join-point.

Spring AOP supports only method-level join-points, and patterns are used to choose specific methods of the target object. A pattern consists of the following expressions in the same order:

  • Access modifier: For Spring AOP, the only possible value is public. This expression is optional.
  • Return type: This is the fully qualified name of the return type. Putting * for this expression means it allows any return type.
  • Java package: Java package name can be used.  
  • Java class name: Java class name can ...
