Because the focus of this entire Wrox Blox is on how to make the jump from ASP to ASP.NET, the focus, here, is not going to be on complete concepts, such as how a user registration system should operate or dealing with user roles (you should already know the fundamentals of things like this). That is, instead of creating a full-blown working application from start to finish in ASP.NET, you are presented with practical examples of how you accomplish one thing in ASP, and how that translates into the ASP.NET world.
