It's a bit misleading in the sense that everything done in this chapter since the hardware install with the CLI can also be done with J-Web. So, although J-Web is a different configuration tool — a graphical user interface (GUI) and network management tool, not a CLI — the result is the same.

You may be asking: If the end result of using J-Web is the same as when using the CLI, why care about J-Web? The answer is shown in the following list, which shows some benefits of using J-Web rather than CLI:

  • Multifunction devices (such as switches that route and perform firewall functions, act as a DHCP server, and so on) are rendered more understandable when features are presented as functional sections.
  • The J-Web GUI is easier to understand and use than commands and modes are.

All in all, J-Web can make configuration of Junos OS devices, especially low-end devices, simpler and more compartmentalized.
