The great majority of operating systems in use today employ the ASCII codeset to represent characters. ASCII, the American Standard Code for Information Interchange, started out as a 7-bit code that represented uppercase and lowercase letters, the digits 0–9, and a dozen or so control characters like NUL and EOT.
