In Chapter 4, we discussed how to deal with moving data from observational research towards design insights to identify opportunities for your designs. Part of that discussion touched on sketching to help you understand the design problem, and in this chapter we’ll look at sketching to help you explore a range of possible concepts. Making designs that are easy, intuitive, and elegant takes a lot of thought, iteration, and refinement. The sketching process will help communicate your thoughts to others and solve problems visually, before you settle on a design approach to prototype and test (we’ll cover prototyping and testing in Chapter 6).
