OpenLDAP is a directory solution that is rapidly being adopted. However, the reasons for this rapid adoption are quite different from the reasons Active Directory was rapidly adopted. Open-LDAP embraces the open source philosophy of software development. In addition, development of OpenLDAP is on a volunteer basis, and the software is available free of charge. This combination of philosophical differences appeals to many organizations, and it has rapidly made OpenLDAP a major contender in the directory space.
