A Brief Interlude

I want to pause here in the book. At this point, we've covered the basics of what you need to better structure a decision-making process for important decisions. To reiterate: simply making better decisions is the number-one way to be a better leader.

Given where we're at, let's just do a quick recap on what I've argued so far. It's actually pretty easy to sum up, so if you're looking for a way to speed read the book, maybe just read these few pages here.

Here's the recap:

• Business decisions are highly contextual. Surveying many categories of typical business decisions, it's apparent that common solutions to problems have equally viable opposite approaches.
• The best way to solve highly contextual problems is not to reduce them to something more general and apply the same basic solution repeatedly. This is a shame because:
  • As pattern matchers, we really like doing this.
  • As followers of idealized business personalities and stories, we really like doing this.
  • Business books tend to encourage this behavior.
• The best way to solve highly contextual problems is to collect options and select the best option according to what's most important, i.e., a primary objective.
  • Wisdom literature as a genre would back me up on this even if the landscape of modern business literature wouldn't necessarily.
  • There are lots of places we can go to collect options for solving problems both inside and outside the business and your industry. It's important to cultivate a variety ...
