This book is a playbook, jam‐packed with plays to help you exude influence from the middle. No one would expect you to run every play, to absorb every piece of advice, to use every single tool in this book. That said, Figure 9.1 will help you easily remember all of the tools available to you in this book (at a high‐level).
That's the overview. Now, if desired, you can get into more detail and build a customized plan that's tailored to your interests and needs, to meet you where you're at. Using the template in Figure 9.2, build your own personal MAP (Middle Action Plan) by selecting the tools/plays that are right for you in your current situation, by spending time revisiting and fully absorbing those tools, and then by diligently listing out the associated specific actions that you'll take.
The success of any organization goes as those who lead from the middle go. There's no job in any organization more critical, challenging, or exhilarating when done well. To do so requires understanding and overcoming all the unique challenges leaders in the middle face, knowing how to rock all the roles involved in leading from the middle, having the right mindset and skillset, and applying the right set of specific, specialty plays. You now have all of that at your fingertips.
