A leader is a dealer in hope.
AFTER WORKING FOR just under two years as a young associate with a Wall Street law firm, I walked into the managing partner’s office one day and told him that I would be resigning in a month to teach law in Africa. The managing partner, a distinguished lawyer with a courtly manner, was surprised at my decision but wished me well in my future activities. As we shook hands at the door of his office, he expressed a desire that all leaders should have about the people they lead: ‘‘I wish I had gotten to know what makes you tick.’’
