We believe what we perceive

‘Perception is reality’ is a mantra I hear on quite a regular basis, which is a refrain used as a caution to us when we’re struggling to understand why the facts that seem self-evident are viewed in a different light by others.

However, as Jim Taylor Ph.D. stated in a Psychology Today article,1 ‘perception is NOT reality’.

He then explained the dictionary differences:

Perception: The way of regarding, understanding, or interpreting something; a mental impression.

Reality: The world or the state of things as they actually exist… existence that is absolute, self-sufficient, or objective, and not subject to human decisions or conventions.
