So when I got on to O'Reilly, I was like a kid in a candy store. There are playlists. There are answers. There's on-demand training. It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
Chapter 1. Why Systems, Why Now
A few months ago, in an executive education session I was teaching, an operations leader raised her hand and asked something I’ve since heard a hundred different ways: “I use AI every day. So why does my workload feel exactly the same?”
She wasn’t using it wrong. She was using it well actually, even better than most of the others in the room. And that’s exactly why it mattered, because the honest answer had nothing to do with her prompts.
A divide is opening among professionals who use AI. On one side are people who chat with it. On the other are people who build with it. The difference is not technical ability. It’s whether anyone ever showed them how a system works: not just the chat window, but the full picture of where information comes from, how context shapes what the AI produces, and what happens with the result. Most professionals never get that view. So they stay on the chatting side, working hard, experimenting constantly, and quietly wondering why none of it compounds.
