Part III. Detect
Spotting Ransomware Before It’s Too Late
The NIST Cybersecurity Framework’s Detect function is about developing and implementing activities to identify cybersecurity events in a timely manner. You can’t stop or recover from an attack you don’t know about, and the sooner you detect it, the better chance you have of containing the damage. Detection isn’t about preventing attacks—it’s about ensuring you find out within hours, not months.
Chapter 8, “Detection Tools”, covers the essential systems that spot ransomware before catastrophe strikes. You’ll understand EDR and XDR for real-time threat hunting across your environment, SIEM for comprehensive log analysis and compliance reporting, backup monitoring that serves as both early warning system and last line of defense, and logging practices that provide forensic evidence when incidents occur. We’ll also discuss integrating these tools into a cohesive detection ecosystem and when managed security service providers make sense for organizations that need 24/7 monitoring without the expense of building in-house security operations center (SOC) capabilities.
By the end of this Detect section, you’ll have visibility into ransomware activity from the moment it starts moving through your environment, not six months later when the damage is done.
