Toward the end of the 19th century, the U.S. saw the founding of a People’s Party, a short-lived but influential political association that sought to alleviate the dismal conditions of farmers, especially in the South and the Plains. They called themselves “populists.” As the new railroads had increased the extent of markets, farmers had boosted their supply, which then sent agriculture prices on a downward spiral, and farmers began to experience misery.
