The history of open source at Microsoft started a long time ago. Figure 2-1 illustrates the simplified timeline of open source collaborations and innovations, including the modern 2010s when Microsoft started the Linux on Azure offering as a way to enable migrations, scalable deployments, and hybrid cloud scenarios with a wide variety of Linux distributions running natively on Azure. In this chapter, we’ll explore the main building blocks of Linux on Azure, including the different families of distributions and other open source resources.
