A program that runs on a Linux distribution is called a process. Knowing how to view processes and control (stop, pause, and restart) them is important for overall system health, as well as for security reasons. For example, while viewing processes, you may discover one that is taking a very large amount of system resources (CPU or RAM), which can have an impact on system performance.
